abides means something vaguely like...
"Carry on my wayward son, there will be peace when you are done..."
(A free autographed copy of my book of poems (when / if they are ever published) to the first reader that can name that song and artist...)
Basically that is it... to carry on, to keep on truckin'...to endure, if need be...
